Item Details
Description
Marc Chagall (Russian-French, 1887-1985). "Darkness Over Egypt" from "The Bible" series, 1958-1960. Hand colored etching. Edition 81/100. Signed "M. Ch" & numbered "81/100" below. During the spring of 1931, Marc Chagall traveled to the Holy Land where he experienced an awakening prompting him to create "The Bible" series (1931-1939) which he continued 25 years later (1952-56). The first series included two volumes and 105 etchings. The second series titled "Drawings for the Bible" included 24 works in color published by Verve, Paris and printed by Mourlot, Paris from 1958 to1960. According to Chagall's biographer Franz Meyer, "Chagall's ties with the Bible are very deep indeed; the forms that people its (the Bible's) world are a part of his own inner life, part of the living Jewish heritage, and thus are archetypes of a greater, more intensive world." An original hand-colored etching by Chagall mounted under glass in a custom frame. Size (image): 11.25" L x 9" W (28.6 cm x 22.9 cm) Size (frame): 27" L x 23" W (68.6 cm x 58.4 cm)

Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin, was truly a poet of the art world. Beloved for his dreamlike compositions that bridged various avant-garde movements (Cubism, Fauvism, Symbolism, and Surrealism), Chagall was famous for his signature motifs such as flying figures, bouquets of flowers, animals, as well as references to peasant life and the Jewish tradition. While many of his contemporaries were driven to pursue pure abstraction or non-objectivity, Chagall was faithful to figurative art, albeit with a Modernist's twist.

The World Wars would certainly interrupted Chagall's career, prompting the artist to move between Russia, France, and the United States; however, Chagall still managed to exhibit throughout Europe and the U.S. Furthermore, Chagall's work has been collected by major museums including the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, Chagall created stained-glass windows for Hadassah University Medical Center's Abbell Synagogue in Jerusalem, the Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Metz, the United Nations building in New York City, and the St. Stephen Church in Mainz, Germany.
