PHILEMON DICKINSON
(1739 - 1809) Revolutionary War major general and commander in chief of New Jerset militia, defeated Cornwallis in 1777, member of the Continental Congress and later a senator. Fine association A.L.S. with initialed postscript, 3pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Nov. 20, 1764 to CAESAR RODNEY (1728-1784), a Signer of the Declaration of Indepenence, major general of the Delaware militia and later President of Delaware, at this time a judge. Dickinson tells his friend that he has purchased some fine wine and is sending along a quantity. He adds: "...I have them upon his Word of Honor, to be sound & be free of any adulteration which is common among the Wine Merchants...all I have done to them since I bought them, put into each Pipe 1 Gall. of choice old brandy which I was advised to [buy] by a friend to give an agreeable taste...mine have just been thro' the cooper's hands...they are the pick of 100 Pipes...I keep two pipes myself and lay them by 5 or 6 years...". Expertly inlaid, fine.
