Description
Archive of material related to the WWI service of Lt. Edward Dickson Hicks III of Nashville, Tennessee (1892-1961, 2nd LT, 122nd Heavy Field Artillery, 33 Division, U.S. Army). Includes several photos of Hicks in uniform (one in oval giltwood frame), and multiple letters between Hicks and the young lady who became his wife in 1920, William Hunter Giers, named for her grandfather and called "Hunter". Also included are Hicks' dog tags, uniform patch and sewing pouch; training notebook with handwritten notes; observation record book from the Samur Artillery School; 1918 notebook/journal from Fort Gordon, Ga; wallet; Waterman fountain pen in original box, pat. 1908; certificate of graduation from Officer's Training School; letters from the War Department including one commissioning him to the Officers' Reserve Corps in 1920; his officer's Identity card; embroidered handkerchief "1919 Souvenir of France"; newspaper clippings on Hicks; a collection of European postcards; a brass artillery shell fuse; and several pamphlets - "Extracts from the Manual of Physical Training for use in the United States Army," "How to recognize the Rank of Uncle Sam's Men Afloat and Ashore," "How to be a Soldier by Brainless Bates: A Compendium of Useless Information"; Red Star Line cruise ship booklet; programme for the 33rd Division Horse Show in Luxembourg in 1919; "When You Get Home" Red Cross booklet. Condition
All items exhibit wear, fading, and toning consistent with age. Frame has been regilt and has some losses.
