A Nicoya Polychrome Jaguar Deity Vessel
c. 600 - 1000 AD
The unusually shaped container has a round body set upon the two hind legs and tail of an upright jaguar, seated in a human form. A highly refined jaguar's head extends from the body, while rounded shoulders curve outward, terminating in front paws resting on the knees. The image is painted in red and black with floral designs, armbands, and various panels with stacked animal heads. Above is a cup-like form
featuring intertwining, undulating serpents in black, red, and orange.
