Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1060 to 1340 CE. An attractive vessel in the form of a fish, where the body bows outward and inward and resolves to a slightly turned rim to produce an elegant silhouette, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Boasting hues of cream, black, and russet, the exterior is skillfully hand-painted with a geometric pattern including a spiraling steppe motif that represents the union of sky and earth on the shoulder and an abstract decoration on the base. Applied clay features form the bulging eyes, the projecting, open mouth, and petite fins of the fish, while the rim has been pierced with 4 drill holes, allowing the charming vessel to be suspended. Just imagine the effect once this ancient vessel was hung in one's home - the charming fish must look as though he's swimming through the air with each blow of breeze! Size: 6.5" L x 4.1" W x 3.8" H (16.5 cm x 10.4 cm x 9.7 cm)

Casas Grandes (Spanish for "Great Houses;" also known as Paquime) is a prehistoric archaeological site in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Casas Grandes is one of the largest and most complex Mogollon culture sites in the region. Settlement began after 1130 CE and would see the larger buildings developed into multi-storied dwellings after 1350 CE. The community was abandoned approximately 1450 CE. Casas Grandes is regarded as one of the most significant Mogollon archaeological zones in the northwestern Mexico region, linking it to other sites in Arizona and New Mexico in the United States, and exhibiting the expanse of the Mogollon sphere of influence.
