Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Paquime / Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A coil-made pottery olla decorated with lovely linear, curvilinear, and swirled designs in a style that some have interpreted as being inspired by the southwestern landscape. The decorative register displays some fine line motifs, primarily below the gently flared rim and inside some of the spiralized illustrations, and all are colored in a dark-brown hue atop a beige ground. The decorative style of this vessel belongs to the Ramos Polychrome group, which represents the pinnacle of achievement for Casas Grandes ceramics. Casas Grandes is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was a hugely-important intermediary - in terms of trade, art, and culture - between the empires of Mesoamerica and the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) of the US Southwest. Size: 5.85" W x 4.9" H (14.9 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private South Carolina, USA collection, purchased May 2, 2018; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Tacoma, Washington, USA collection
