Description
Excellent Civil War 1858 Pattern Artillery Enlisted Man's "Hardee" Hat. Fur felt with a 3-inch wide brim featuring two rows of stitching reinforcement at the edge and with a 6-inch tall crown. The brim on the right side is turned up and secured by a regulation stamped brass eagle device. Original worsted red artillery hat cords and black silk hatband are set at the base of the crown. A 12-inch long black ostrich plume is affixed to the left side. The inside of the hat features a 2 ¼-inch wide brown leather sweatband. The inside crown has a gloss-black label lettered in gilt: "U.S. Army / [Eagle and panoply of arms] / 4".
Condition: Very good. Three short closed tears along the front of the brim, the largest being approximately 1-inch long. Eagle plate mounting lug reinforced with masking tape on the inside crown.
