1790 George Washington Manley Medal Struck During His Lifetime - The Finest Quality Example We Have Offered Ranked 17th “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens”
1790 George Washington Manly Medal. Baker-61B. PCGS graded About Uncirculated-53.
One of the greatest medals in the field of collecting historic Washingtonia, actually struck during George Washington's lifetime while as President of the United States. This scarce, Choice Washington Medal is PCGS certified About Uncirculated-53. It has rich original chestnut to chocolate-brown somewhat glossy surfaces with excellent eye appeal to its sharply struck obverse, having only a hint of friction is visible. The reverse strike is very typical for this medal, only lacking the sharpness of definition to the central reverse legends. This was caused by the high relief provided to the large wonderful Portrait of George Washington on the obverse, with greater medal flow directed into that highlight portion. The high rims are in excellent condition being sharp without any of the often seen bumps or bruises. The planchet shows no serious marks or pitting, though there are a few scattered tiny pinpricks in the reverse lower right field, otherwise being as made. There were a few examples sold in the 2004 John Ford Sale, subsequently at auction was an example offered by American Numismatic Rarities, Old Colony Auction, 2005, which sold for $4,370. This exceedingly important and historic 1790 George Washington Manley Medal has been Ranked 17th, in the popular reference book entitled, “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens”.
