Description
1795 North Wales Halfpenny
Exceedingly Rare “Lettered Edge” Variety 1795 North Wales Halfpenny PCGS Certified as Very Fine-25 Rarity-7
1795 North Wales Halfpenny. Lettered Edge. Baker-34A. Breen 1296. W-11155 variety. PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LONDON OR BRISTOL edge. PCGS graded Very Fine-25.
Considered to be High Rarity-7. A lovely, original piece which is about “as struck” from shallow dies meant to simulate wear, intended to aid in its acceptance by the public in general circulation for commerce. A slightly glossy and attractive rich chestnut-brown coin that bears slight friction from its brief circulation. This example is quite bold for a North Wales Halfpenny, although the top of Washington's head and the lower left of the harp are not clearly struck. This current example is perhaps too conservatively graded as it appears better in quality to the 2017 Red Book plate example on page 86 and is virtually identical in quality to another similar, graded AU-55 by PCGS offered in the 2005 July San Francisco, CA. (ANA) Auction, Lot #382 which sold for $7,475.
