c. 1780 Revolutionary War Period, George Washington, Steel Plate Engraving by Prunau, Paris, France, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine.
This wonderful, crisp and deeply embossed original Engraving measures 5.5” x 7.75”, on an larger 8.5" x 11.5" page with its full broad margins present. This is a copy After that of the William Sharp engraving, presented in reverse. A central Portrait of General Washington shown in his military uniform, inside a decorative oval border. A “Liberty Cap” and staff is shown at top above the oval, being protected by a fierce Rattlesnake. The American Flag, and cannons along with some cannonballs are depicted below the oval. This impressive Engraving is titled: "George Washington - Commandant en Chef des Armees - des Etats-Unis de l'Amerique." with additional text below. A lovely, clean example with the embossed outer plate outline easily seen within the heavy laid period paper. Excellent for display.
