Rare Jalisco Pottery Seated Female Hunchback

Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a red and cream slipped terracotta figure of a hunchbacked female. She is kneeling, her her hands on her lower thighs, and wearing nothing but a skirt; her face is higly detailed, with painted eyes and an open mouth full of teeth. The hunchback figure was a common one in this culture. Some scholars attribute it to a particular form of tuberculosis that may have been common there. Figures like this one would have been placed into the tombs dug in shafts beneath Jalisco households where family members were periodically interred; archaeologists believe that they were placed around the edges of the tomb facing inward, as if in conversation with the dead. Size: 6.5" W x 9.4" H (16.5 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Santa Barbara, CA collection acquired at Osuna Gallery in the early 1980's
