Description
An excellent Maya polychrome bowl from El Salvador, ca. 400 - 800 AD. This excellent example is 5-5/8 in in diameter and features a trio of animated monkeys, each depicted with ball game symbols incorporated into their bodies. The rim is decorated with a band of finely drawn Copador style glyphs. In Maya mythology, monkeys are credited with teaching the Maya how to write. The entire bowl is covered with a light orange wash, which enhances the cream slip. Vivid paint, good mineral deposits and root marks. Ex Tribal Treasures Gallery.
