Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean/Florida, Taino people, ca. 15th century CE. A fascinating piece of abstract hollow pottery, a flat-bottomed stamp with a thickly incised design on its base, and a zoomorphic shape to the rest of it. It suggests a frog(?) or some other kind of amphibian or lizard, with pronounced spine and long thin limbs wrapped around the body and up over the head; the face has lips that project from the face and eyes that also jut outwards. This kind of functional abstract art -stamps that were probably made to paint the body or possibly to impress pottery - are commonly found in Taino archaeological sites. Stamp designs, like the ones here - obtuse angles radiating from a small circle - are almost always geometric combinations of straight and wavy lines. Size: 4.8" L x 3.25" W x 2.6" H (12.2 cm x 8.3 cm x 6.6 cm)
