Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean / Florida, Arawak People, Taino, ca. 15th century CE. An amazing small figure of a crouched human male with a skull-like visage, amazingly carved in great detail without the use of metal tools in serpentine. His knees are drawn up around his large, erect penis; his hands rest on his knees. He wears some kind of crown or headdress that is pierced for suspension. Skull iconography seems to have had magical/religious meaning and is a frequent motif in ceremonial objects. Perhaps this was a personal amulet. Size: 0.95" W x 1.9" H (2.4 cm x 4.8 cm)
