China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. This is a beautful, celadon glazed jar in the shape of a granary complete with a faux-thatched roof and an unglazed, flared foot. These types of pottery are either Yue Ware or Longquan Ware, which succeeded Yue Ware with a similar style but what many scholars argue is more technical skill. Longquan, located in southern Zhejiang province, was one of the major ceramic centers in China from the 11th to the 16th century. Many of items like this one seem to have been made specifically to be placed in tombs, or given as gifts to the elderly in the hope they would pray for their descendants. We have evidence for inscriptions dedicating similar jars to grandparents. Size: 5.15" W x 5.75" H (13.1 cm x 14.6 cm).
