Description
AMERICAN FOLK ART PATRIOTIC DRAWING AND COPYBOOK, watercolor and ink on paper, featuring a spread-wing Federal eagle clutching arrows and a flag in its beak while perched atop a stylized shield, scrolled banners above and below inscribed "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" and "RICHARD J. DIEHL / January 30th 1865". Housed under glass in a 19th-century molded and carved walnut frame. Retains remainder of Diehl's paper-bound copybook, cover inscribed "This is Richard J. Diehl's Copy / 1865", interior pages unused except for several aphorisms placed as headers, such as "A man of words and not of deeds is like a garden full of weeds". Discovered in Lehigh Co., PA. Circa 1865. Framed drawing 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" sight, 13 1/2" x 11 1/2" OA.
Drawing with overall toning with some foxing. Large ink stains and other areas of discoloration. Not examined out of frame. Remaining copybook in poor condition with toning, foxing, staining, and losses, covers detached (back missing).
