Description
Roman Empire, 2nd to 3rd century CE. This is a nicely shaped iron contos, a long, wooden-handled cavalry lance which would have been 4 to 5 m in length and derives its name from the Greek word "kontos", oar. When handled, the weapon took two hands to wield, while the horseman gripped his mouth with his knees. This rather thin example was probably made in the Roman provinces. Size: 16" L x 1.2" W (40.6 cm x 3 cm)
