Item Details
Description
Late Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An exquisite form, this near miniature flask created from hand blown green glass boasts a ribbed body, dimpled base with broken pontil, and most intriguing, the neck actually recessed when it was created, resulting in a 'sunken' and assymetric silhouette. The ancient Romans were responsible for introducing a major new technique in glass production during the 1st century CE. Glassblowing allowed glass workers to produce vessels with considerably thinner walls, decreasing the amount of glass needed for each vessel. It was quicker than other techniques and allowed for refined detailing. This is a wonderful example! Size: 2-1/2"H x 2-1/8" in diameter.

Provenance: Ex-private New York, NY collection.
