Description
Rome, Imp erial period, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. This is a long, thin, iron, leaf-shaped spear point with a socketed handle. This is probably the tip from a pilum, which is the most famous weapon used by the Roman soldier. Ancient authors frequently describe the accuracy, efficiency, and tactical use of this javelin-like weapon. This iron point would have been attached to a piece of wood approximately three feet (one meter) long. Size: 17-1/2" L x 1-1/2" W (44.5 cm x 3.8 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
