Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. A Mexican nicho that displays nine milagros (also called ex-voto or dijes or promesas), the central one featuring a relief of the Virgin Mary against an oval ground, and surrounding her miniature milagros depicting a pig, a pair of lungs, a hand, a four legged animal (perhaps a goat), a hen with chicks, an ear of corn, a bird, and a dog. Milagros are religious folk charms that are traditionally used for healing purposes and as votive offerings in Mexico, the southern United States, other areas of Latin America, and parts of the Iberian peninsula. The nicho is comprised of a glass door with a decorative, hammered tin surround featuring a palm frond motif and a box made of recycled tin from signage. There is a metal loop for suspension on the back as well. Size: 8.5" L x 6.5" W (21.6 cm x 16.5 cm)
