Description
Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a fun example of one of the Ogoni "elu" (spirit) masks, which are cane wood masks with white-painted faces, narrow eyes, prominent noses and ears, and articulated jaws. This particular example has hair in two elaborate braids, which signifies a bride or beautiful maiden of marriageable age, hair coiffed for success. Darker marks on the face indicate tattooing or scarification. Size: 6" W x 8.3" H (15.2 cm x 21.1 cm)
