Description
Byzantine/Islamic, ca. 8th to 9th century CE. This is a clear glass flask. Objects like this are called "molar" because their feet resemble the roots of those teeth. This bottle was made from a molded rectangular block of glass (the mold pouring - rather than blowing - explaining why it has such thick walls) that was wheel-cut to give it its distinctive shape; a thin channel was drilled out of the middle in order to fill it with cosmetics like kohl, unguents, or perfumes. Size: 1.2" W x 2.9" H (3 cm x 7.4 cm)
