Item Details
Description
Late Roman / Early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. An exceedingly fine hand blown glass flask of a discoidal shaped body with a dimpled bottom with broken pontil, a long, tapering, narrow neck and trailed designs at the area bridging the neck and shoulders, comprised of pearly translucent glass with stunning golden and rainbow iridescence; the overall effect reminiscent of an Australian opal with highlights of pink and pale periwinkle most pronounced. This design was ideal for sprinkling scented oils and perfumes. Moreover, the narrow long neck prevented the precious substances from evaporating too quickly. A breathtaking work of ancient glass manifesting refined technique and an elegant form. Size: 5-1/2"H x 3-1/8"W

Provenance: Ex-H. Berk collection, Chicago, IL
