Description
Rome / Byzantium, ca. 6th century CE. A tripod bronze cast vessel with curved walls, suspended from three "chains" that are each comprised of two linked pieces, the upper pieces of an elongated diamond-shaped form that all connect to a large hook at the top and are joined with the vessel via three attachment loops on the nicely delineated rim. How remarkable to find such an example of ancient ingenuity! The surface of the vessel is also adorned with incised linear decoration at the lower region and the base. Censers were incense burners. They are often difficult to differentiate from lamps, because they share a number of similar characteristics. Hence, it is also possible that this particular example although very likely an incense burner may have been used as a lamp. A lovely piece that has aged ever so gracefully and developed a beautiful green patina. Size: 3.5" W x 14.125" H (8.9 cm x 35.9 cm); the vessel measures 3.5" in diameter x 2.5" H (8.9 cm x 6.4 cm)
