Description
Classical World, late Roman Imperial to early Byzantine Empire period, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A cast-leaded-bronze bread stamp that is shaped like an 'L' with an integral ring handle on the verso. The recessed cavity along the obverse face houses 6 raised Greek letters which read "KARPOI," meaning "fruits" in Greek. Bread stamps like this example were impressed into a loaf of bread at the town bakery to mitigate theft and ensure a bread loaf went home with the correct customer. Size: 3" L x 2.375" W (7.6 cm x 6 cm)
