Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A fine leaded bronze reliquary pendant consisting of 2 crosses that fit together with the relief of Christ on one side and Mary or another saint on the other, attached via a large loop for suspension. While the cross was once able to be opened to hold a lock of hair or a prayer document, both halves have fused together over time. The entire surface of the cross is covered in dark-green patina with areas of light-brown patina as well. Size (pendant): 1" W x 2.3" H (2.5 cm x 5.8 cm); (necklace strand): 22.2" L (56.4 cm)

Byzantine pendant strung on modern strand to be wearable as a pendant. Bottom hinge broken. Expected surface wear with abrasions and softening of detail. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina and great encrustations to interior.
