Description
VIRGINIA VERNACULAR WALNUT TALL-CASE CLOCK, the hood with bold, cut-out crest and side ornaments, enclosing a painted wooden face and later spring-driven brass works, the highly figured waist with narrow door, raised on a base with cut-out feet and skirt. Yellow pine and cherry secondary woods. Retains a warm, rich surface. Includes part of original wooden works. Probably Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Circa 1820. 87 1/2" HOA, 17" WOA.
Very good visual condition, small repair to crest, some alterations. Unknown working condition.
Provenance: Rudicell estate, Front Royal, VA.
Catalogue Note: This clock presents a real mystery. The case is in the style of Riley Whiting and other clock makers around Winchester, CT. It is likely that the cabinetmaker responsible for the clock offered here was copying one of the grain-painted pine CT cases. He chose highly figured walnut veneer to mimic the grain paint and his moldings and cut-outs are much more robust than those seen on the CT cases.
