Description

SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA WALNUT TALL-CASE CLOCK, eight-day brass works, painted sheet-iron face with second face, moon dial and calendar. Hood with broken-arch pediment having flower blossom roundels to terminals, centering a turned finial, with matching smaller finials to corners, above a tombstone door flanked by turned columns, with matching columns to rear corners, case having panel door with ovolo upper corners and applied center panel with matching corners, above a fielded panel plinth base, raised on ring turned feet, pencil inscription to top of bonnet relating to old repairs with "1944" date. Original weights and pendulum present. Probably Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Early 19th century. 97" HOA, 20 1/2", hood 20 1/2" WOA.
Face excellent overall, with some minor flaking to paint. Case with warm refinished surface, later applied shaped panel to door concealing plugged bulls eye aperture, broken-arch pediment restored. Not currently in working condition.
Provenance: Descended in a Virginia family.
