GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1890-1978) "VIBA" PORTRAIT PRINT, etching on paper, an engaging half-length depiction of a seated young woman before an open window, she, wearing antique garments, in pensive pose with chin resting on hand, reverse signed and dated in plate, as well as pencil signed lower right margin. A copy, attached verso, of what appears to be the etching's extreme lower margin, now obscured by the matte, includes the notations "J4859 / W. 62 Viba / A54981". Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1929. 8 1/4" x 6 3/4" plate, 14 3/4" x 12 3/4" OA.
Excellent visual condition, slight crease line lower margin. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the collection of Larry and Elizabeth Goldman, Smithfield and Monterey, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) studied at the Royal Academy in London, and went on to continue his training in Paris and Milan. On the Continent, Brockhurst was exposed to the portraits of iconic Renaissance artists such as Botticelli and Da Vinci, both of whose work would continue to exert an abiding influence on the Englishman's own art. Recognized early in life for his talent, Brockhurst went on to achieve great success as an etcher and a portrait painter for the era's elite. Brockhurst's portrait etchings continue to hold value as more and more collectors come to discover these richly textured, piercing compositions.
