GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1890-1978) "JEUNESSE DORE" PORTRAIT PRINT, etching on paper, an alluring half-length depiction of a seated young woman (Kathleen Woodward, the artist's second wife and frequent model) with reverse signature in plate lower edge, also pencil signed and dated lower right corner of margin. Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1942. 10 7/8" x 8 7/8" plate, 20 1/2" x 17" OA.
Overall moderate toning and light scattered foxing. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the collection of Larry and Elizabeth Goldman, Smithfield and Monterey, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978) studied at the Royal Academy in London, and went on to continue his training in Paris and Milan. On the Continent, Brockhurst was exposed to the portraits of iconic Renaissance artists such as Botticelli and Da Vinci, both of whose work would continue to exert an abiding influence on the Englishman's own art. Recognized early in life for his talent, Brockhurst went on to achieve great success as an etcher and a portrait painter for the era's elite. The sitter for the present etching was Kathleen, aka Dorette, Woodward, a beautiful young model Brockhurst depicted frequently and eventually married after leaving his first wife following an acrimonious divorce. Brockhurst's portrait etchings continue to hold value as more and more collectors come to discover these richly textured, piercing compositions.
