Beyond the exquisite aesthetic beauty of this piece, is its extensive iconographic program adorning the front side and lengthy Cyrillic prayer with more imagery on the back. On the front we see the crucifixion of the Son of God. Above this is Christ the Savior flanked by a pair of angels, below a skull representing Golgotha or Skull Hill, the location where Adam was reportedly buried and Christ was crucified. Turn it over, and the decoration continues with exquisite incised floral patterns. All finely cast, remarkably detailed, of a substantive scale and weight. A stunning work of religious art!
