Item Details
Description
Europe, probably France, 15th century CE. This is a pair of vellum pages from illuminated manuscripts, possibly from the same one although there are some slight stylistic differences. They have red and pale blue details and show musical notes on some of the pages. They most likely come from The Book of Hours, a prayerbook used by (mostly wealthy) laypeople; like its counterpart for the clergy, the Divine Office, it was divided into times of day and included the Psalms, hymns, and various prayers. By the time of the early Renaissance, the Book of Hours was quite popular, indicating that the laity were growing more interested in communing directly with God and the saints rather than relying on the church and clergy to communicate with a higher power. Size: 5" W x 6.7" H (12.7 cm x 17 cm).
