Description
France, probably Paris, ca. 1415 CE. This is a vellum page from a French Book of Hours showing Psalm 98: 2-6 handwritten in Latin. Although paper was available in southern Europe, bookmakers in northern Europe -- called libraires -- used vellum, parchment made from animal skin, until well into the 15th century. This page comes from The Book of Hours, a prayerbook used by (mostly wealthy) laypeople; like its counterpart for the clergy, the Divine Office, it was divided into times of day and included the Psalms, hymns, and various prayers. The start of each verse is marked by an illuminated letter done in red, blue, and gold. Size: 4.2" W x 5.8" H (10.7 cm x 14.7 cm).
