Description
It is believed this circa 1860s-1870s 4 strip Calcutta cane rod is the only known rod marked and attributed to Thomas and Henry Pritchard. The elaborate engraving on the nickel silver butt cap reads "Pritchard Bros./Makers/91 Fulton St./->N.Y.<-" in 4 lines. Nickel silver slide band reel seat, winding check and seamed, welted and spiked ferrules. Guides are hanging rings, with round single plane top guides. Grip is corded in dark green wraps. The rod is beautifully wrapped in 1/4" dark red silk intermediates from the winding check to Three wraps above the (also red wrapped) stripping. At this point the intermediates and guide wraps change to Light tan with red tipping, also 1/4" diameter, in a pattern of progressive smaller intermediates throughout the mid. The tips, which are 4 1/2" and 5" short, return to the red wraps, this time in intermediates of 1/16" with 3 wraps of 3 turns each midway between each intermediate. Each tip also has a 2" wrap at 14" and 29" above the male ferrule. This is not indicative of repair but purely decorative. The butt shows a long dark glue line on one seam, but an opening in the seam cannot be felt. Overall condition can be most accurately described as Very Fine Original. Tips are packed in a Calcutta tip tube with original cloth bag, and the whole in a replacement outer bag. Kerr describes the rod (see Kerr, pp 110-111) as one of his finest and most significant historical pieces. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
