Item Details
Description
An early example of Orvis workmanship, the rod features the Eggleston patent spring reel seat, sheet cork grip, non-serrated ferrules, elongated nickel silver winding check, butt cap and sliding ring. Wrapped red with signature wraps at the grip and full intermediates. There is very slight chipping to the varnish just above the signature wraps, otherwise the finish is sound and ferrules, although in need of a cleaning and lubrication with dry soap, are tight. Serial number 199 is penned on each section at the ferrules. More important, beneath the spring of the reel seat the wooden barrel is marked, although barely visible, with the same number, testament to complete originality of all components. The butt section is shorter than the mid and tips by the length of the ferrule slide, but assembled the rod reaches its full 9 feet, the slides being fully seated. Original cloth bag, the rod is packed in an aluminum tube which may be original but the plated hardware bears knurling reminiscent of that found on F.E. Thomas tubes. The rod could be fished today as it is, with a 4 or 5 weight line and a "cast" of wet flies.
