Description
Circa 1863-1865. Hollow built 4 strip Calcutta cane. Full length butt and mid. Tips, which are enclosed in a brass capped bamboo tip tube, are equally 8 inches short, and appear to be original size, although it is unresolved that this is an original format as the tip tube would accept a section longer by 2 inches. hanging ring guides, three ring tip tops. Wrapped in deep red silk. Seamed non-welted female ferrules, spiked male ferrules, and seamed butt cap, sliding ring and grip check. Black cord wrapped grip lacquered black. The knurling on the sliding band and butt cap as well as the stubby ferrule spikes are hallmarks of early Murphy construction. This rod is pictured by Jeffrey L. Hatton in Rod Crafting (pp 8-9) and also Thomas C. Kerr (p 127)in Early American Rods and Rodmakers. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
