Item Details
Description
American, 19th century, Civil-War Era Depiction of Slavery, third quarter of the 19th century, watercolor on paper, unsigned. Biography: Mladen G. Frlan was born on April 15, 1926 to Antum and Ana (n‚e: Jure) Frlan on the island of Zlarin off the Dalmatian Coast. A university graduate, he went on to study at the Academy of Art in Zagreb Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia. Frlan began exhibiting at European galleries in the late 1950's including the Gallery Creuzevault in Paris, the City Gallery in Constance Switzerland, and in Germany, the University Gallery in Erlange, and the CVJM, Kleine, and Salon Boehm Galleries in Mannheim. Visiting the United States on a one year visa granted by the Yugoslavian government in 1961, Frlan resided in Wisconsin with a compatriot and immediately resumed exhibiting, with a show at the Wustum Museum in Racine in 1962, Chicago's Gallery Fairweather Hardin in 1962, and the Public Museum in Kenosha Wisconsin in 1963. While in Racine he met and married Mary Lou Van Eimeren in 1963, moving to New Jersey in early 1965, settling in Ft. Lee and Cliffside Park. They continued to live in Cliffside Park until their deaths in 2015 (Mladen died Jan. 19, 2015 and Mary Lou died Feb. 8, 2015). Although Frlan's subsequent painting career was cut short by illness, he continued to maintain a 3000 square foot studio for his art and antiques conservation business in addition to storing paintings and antiques acquired over his five decades as a collector. Litchfield County Auctions is grateful for the opportunity to offer the Mladen Frlan estate to the public.(MLFR4443)(AM)
