Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian
Costa Rica - Atlantic Watershed
Period: Ca. 800 AD - 1200 AD
Size: 16" long x 12 1/4" wide x 6 1/2" tall
Provenance: Private Connecticut collection, acquired in the early 1970s, Ex- Arte Primitivo Gallery NY,NY. Description: Carved gray volcanic tuffa stone grinding table standing on tapered cylindrical tripod legs, and having a carved openwork central structural support decorated with a stylized bat form. Outer table edge carved with a serrated border. Decorated mutates carved of volcanic stone originated in the utilitarian forms that were used for grinding foodstuffs, primarily corn, in Precolumbian America. Central American examples, such as this metate, were so extensively embellished that ritual offering table use is presumed. Some authorities believe they had connections to ruler ship and may have functioned as thrones.
