Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A big metate, carved from volcanic stone, standing on three legs, with a long saurian-like head - probably a caiman, a common symbolic animal in this culture - projecting from one side. The legs are openwork, each with multiple triangular openings creating a deceptively delicate appearance that emphasizes the skill of the maker. The grinding surface of the metate is deeply curved and thin. The head projecting from it has some human features, including what looks like a headdress and spooled earrings. Size: 25.25" L x 12.1" W x 9.5" H (64.1 cm x 30.7 cm x 24.1 cm)
Metate technology developed initially for the utilitarian purpose of grinding corn; however, they evolved into meaningful ritual objects, replete with strong iconography and intriguing sculptural forms. Examples of a larger scale but similar degree of decorative carving and iconographic symbolism were sometimes used to seat a departed lord on his journey to the afterlife. The carvers almost always represented predatory, fierce animals, like this caiman.
