Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian
Costa Rica - Guanacaste-Nicoya zone
Period: Ca. 300 AD - 700 AD
Size: 24.0" long x 10.25" wide x height 13.5 in
Provenance: Ex- Bonham's & Butterfields Aug. 13th 2012, Lot# 1043. Bob Knill Collection Tucson, AZ. Description: Carved gray volcanic tuffa stone grinding table standing on tapered cylindrical geometrically carved triangle legs. Outer table edge carved with a serrated border. Head of an own with body details carved on the underside. Geometric carving at top with long mano. Decorated mutates carved of volcanic stone originated in the utilitarian forms that were used for grinding foodstuffs, primarily corn, in Precolumbian America. Central American examples, such as this metate, were so extensively embellished that ritual offering table use is presumed. Some authorities believe they had connections to ruler ship and may have functioned as thrones.
