Description
Cambodia / Thailand, Khmer Dynasty, Bayon style, ca. 12th to 13th century. Ring and hook in a stylized lotus blossom surmounted by a temple emerging from a bud, the hook a Naga body culminating in a cobra's head. On each side are a dancing Garuda with avian face and stylized wings. An exceptional example! Custom stand. Size: 7.5" H (19 cm)
Khmer royalty and aristocracy were carried in wood and wicker palanquins which were typically suspended from a transverse carrying pole with decorative bronze hooks.
Provenance: Ex- Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, CO, acquired in the 1950's.
