Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. An attractive set of matching palanquin hooks cast from bronze bearing thick ring sockets topped with a tiered floral finial that interestingly resembles the ushnisha of Buddha. The vine-form hook portions curve gently backwards before projecting frontwards with leafy emanations and lotus bud tips. Bright green patina has formed across each hook and nicely contrasts with the thick iron patina within the sockets. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.75" W x 4.7" H (4.4 cm x 11.9 cm)
Palanquin hooks were an essential part of the wooden and wicker palanquins that were the primary mode of transport for royal and elite people in Khmer society. These decorative hooks were used to suspend the palanquin from the transverse pole used to carry it. The technical skill and artistry of Khmer bronze casters is evident in these examples, with their ornate decoration despite their heavy use.
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
