Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A trio of cast bronze items: an offering bowl, a bell, and a lidded lime container. Bronze pedestal dishes such as this usually held ritualistic water or offerings, and this elegant example rests on a flared pedestal foot with the deep bowl mounted on top. The slender two-piece vessel container comes apart - the tiered, stupa-like lid rests atop a tall interior rim- the jar was used to hold lime powder which enhanced the effects of narcotic substances like betel. The interior of the lower body is encrusted with earthen deposits and possible remnants of its original contents. The domed bell has a suspension loop on the top, and is of a simplified form, likely used for keeping track of animals such as cattle. All three items have a dark green and blue patina with mineral encrustations scattered throughout. Size of offering bowl: 3.75" Diameter x 3.25" H (9.5 cm x 8.3 cm)
