Description
Very Rare Diminutive Molded Redware Pitcher with Lead-and-Manganese Glaze, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, an ornately-molded example with relief foliate motifs to body and collar, the spout with relief acanthus leaf, the finely-molded handle embellished with multiple spurs. Surface decorated with sponged manganese over a bright-orange ground and covered in a clear lead glaze. Impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Exceptional form. Excellent condition with only minor flaws. A minor chip to top edge of spout, some minor wear to tip of spout, and a small chip and a few minuscule nicks to right side of rim. Additionally, some typical in-the-firing contact marks to bottom edge. H 5 1/2".
