Description
STAMPED "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO.", PENNSYLVANIA DECORATED STONEWARE CAKE CROCK WITH COVER, salt-glazed, approximately three-gallon capacity, truncated cylindrical form with squared rim, applied arched handles, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Brushed cobalt hanging dotted-tulip decoration repeated twice to each side and repeated four times to cover edge, additional cobalt to handle terminals. Stamp to underside of cover and below one handle. John Bell (1800-1880), Waynesboro, PA. 1840-1880. 7 1/2" H, 10" D rim.
Excellent undamaged condition. Having some manufacturing flaws including two minor indentations to side and kiln furniture marks, as made.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.
