Description: Archaistic form, the fanghu shaped body flanked by a pair of animal mask handles of bronze with suspending rings, decorated to the front and back with a pair of standing peacocks amid floral blossoms, the sides with birds in flight among further floral blossoms and rockwork. The splayed foot skirted with qilin galloping on cresting waves, decorated to the interior with stylized lotus scroll. The frieze panels decorated with jeweled lanterns.Rests on a well carved ebony stand with losses and age cracks.

History: Early Ming decorative arts inherited the richly eclectic legacy of the Mongol Yuan dynasty, which included both regional Chinese traditions and foreign influences. For example, the fourteenth-century development of blue-and-white ware and cloisonné; enamelware arose, at least in part, in response to lively trade with the Islamic world, and many Ming examples continued to reflect strong West Asian influences. A special court-based Bureau of Design ensured that a uniform standard of decoration was established for imperial production in ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and lacquer.
