Description
Latin America, Mexico, Michoacan, 20th century CE. This is a handcarved and painted black wooden mask with bright red and white details. This mask is from the Dance Negritos, a traditional dance that takes place every year from December 24 to February 2. The dance honors the memory of the people of African descent who were brought to the New World as slaves by colonial powers. This particular mask was de-accessioned from the Mexico City Anthropology Museum. Size: 4.6" L x 5.1" W x 7.5" H (11.7 cm x 13 cm x 19 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private A. Carmichael collection, New Orleans, acquired in Mexico City in 1984, owner states that it was de-accessioned from the Mexico City Anthropology Museum, but no supporting paperwork is available.
