20th C. Mexican Painted Leather Tigre / Jaguar Mask
20th C. Mexican Painted Leather Tigre / Jaguar Mask
Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1940s to 1950s CE. A vibrant tigre (jaguar) mask from Zitlala, Guerrero in Mexico created for the annual Holy Cross feast days on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. As one of the Holy Cross traditions, men from different towns don elaborate jaguar costumes and masks to participate in a fighting competition that involves hitting one another over the head with knotted ropes. While this may read as violent to the outsider, this activity is viewed as critical to the participating communities in their petitioning deities for a healthy rainy season to bring about a successful planting each spring. In the Guerrero region, this festival is linked to Tlaloc, the Aztec rain god. Beyond their symbolic value, leather masks like this example are also worn to protect the wearers from severe injury. This example is painted yellow with black linear and circular markings on the "coat." Such masks are traditionally either yellow or green; the color depends on which neighborhood or barrio the participant comes from. In addition, this mask is enlivened by large protruding cylindrical eyes inlaid with mirror and a very large open mouth, lined with ruby red lips that dramatically part to display pointy teeth and a long tongue. Since this mask was used in such a rugged ceremony, it was repaired every season. Size: 13.5" W x 10.5" H (34.3 cm x 26.7 cm)

The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. The mystique and might of the jaguar clearly continued to inspire Mexicans who celebrate the feast of the Holy Cross with their fierce jaguar combat tradition.

Provenance: Ex-private A. Carmichael collection, New Orleans, acquired in Mexico City in the early 1980's.
