Description
Latin America, Guatemala or Mexico, possibly Michoacan, ca. early 20th century CE. An expressive and beautifully hand-carved and painted Negrito mask from Michoacan, indicative of Mexico's rich Afro-Mexican cultural history. Displays skillful high relief carving of features, bold paint contrasts in hues of black, red, and white, and a finely incised coiffure and beard. Eye slits carved for the wearer. Braided cord on back side for wearing or suspension. See "Arts and Crafts of Mexico" and "Mexican Ceremonial and Festival Masks" for similar Michoacan negrito examples. Size: 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" (16.5 x 16.5 cm).
