Description
Latin America, Mexico, Guerrero, likely Teloloapan, ca. mid 20th century CE. A vintage polychrome wood mask, skillfully carved and painted, depicting a horned male visage with expressive, thickly lashed, wide open eyes, dramatic eyebrows, a curved nose, black expression lines across the cheeks, a pronounced black mustache,and bright red lips. This mask was used in the dance of the devil performed during the festival of San Francisco each October 3rd. Two long carved wooden horns painted in hues of green, red, yellow, and black extend from his forehead. Size: 12-1/4" at widest x 8" x 6-1/2" deep (31.1 x 20.3 x 16.5 cm)
